SUPER COOL AND SUPER FUNNY; THE LONDA RAISES 1,390 EUROS FOR THE CYPRUS ANTI-CANCER SOCIETY AFTER TWO SELL OUT SHOWS BY ‘BRITAIN’S FUNNIEST WOMAN’, SHAZIA MIRZA, IN THE 5TH YEAR CELEBRATIONS OF THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL’S ‘FUNNY WOMEN’ SERIES.
The Londa Hotel is proud to announce it has just presented the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society with a cheque for 1,390 euros following two sell out shows by ‘Britain’s Funniest Woman’, Shazia Mirza. What began as a week’s luxury prize for the winner of the UK’s ‘Funny Women’ competition in 2006, has developed into a much loved regular event in the Londa Hotel’s social diary, the ‘Funny Women Series’ of comedy shows.
Now in its 5th successful year, Londa’s General Manager, Jochen Niemann, explains how it all began: “We started in 2006 when we sponsored the main prize, a week’s holiday at the Londa. One month prior to our very first ‘Funny Woman’ I thought why not have a show? There is a huge Ex-Pat community in Limassol and we have the “funniest” British woman with us. So we put 1 and 1 together…”
From the first show with just 30 guests, the ‘Funny Women’ Series at the Londa has grown to a regular event with 3-4 shows per year, always in support of the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society. Nieman adds “We have had some excellent comediennes performing for us at the Londa: Karen Bayley, Sally Anne Hayward to name just two, but the highlight of course is always Shazia Mirza, and this year both her shows sold out. With a new, very welcome sponsor for the flights, following GB Airways takeover by Easyjet, I am delighted to say an excellent cooperation with Ian Larke of ‘My Bunkers’ has begun, and we are now looking forward to many more years of comedy shows”.
Ian Larke, founder of M.Y. Bunkers added “Prior to establishing my company in Limassol, I had always been keen to support charity events through the Round Table in the UK. So when I eventually met Jochen after a great night’s comedy at the Londa, the opportunity to sponsor the ‘Funny Women’ series seemed like an excellent way to give something back and have a laugh at the same time. It’s become quite a fixture for us and something our clients really look forward to.”
President of the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society, Artemios Zachariou, was delighted with the donation “Our relationship with Jochen Niemann and the Londa Hotel, has been a long and happy one. We are thrilled to receive this gift from the proceedings of Shazia’s last two shows. Not only are audiences enjoying high quality comedy entertainment, but they are also helping raise much needed funds. This will certainly be put to good use”.
The Londa is unique on the island; as Cyprus’s only boutique hotel it seamlessly blends impeccable style and service to create wonderful moments for the hotel’s residents and visitors. With its ongoing innovative ‘Funny Women’ comedy series and regular live jazz performances, the Londa is quietly setting a new fashionable standard for inspired quality entertainment in Limassol.
The ‘Funny Women’ series at the Londa will continue with further performances in 2012. Watch this space!
