Best foot forward into 2018! It’s a time-honoured tradition in Cyprus that stepping over the threshold “right foot first” will bring you good luck in the New Year. And it’s happening right here, on the Londa Hotel dancefloor, on New Year’s Eve! After a sumptuous 6 course Gala Dinner at the Caprice, many of our guests will be definitely up for welcoming in the New Year by “bustin’ moves” or “throwing shapes” to those traditional dance classic faves. As the midnight hour approaches… from the Caprice Terrace there’s always the clear reassuring views of the eternal Mediterranean for those moments to sip champagne, quietly toasting to the year ahead…
Of course, there will be some curious cultural adventurers who are keen for their feet to wander a little further along the timeless Limassol shoreline. One of the traditional new year customs is the New Year’s Eve party held at Grigoris Afxentiou Square in Limassol city centre, around 5.4kms (3.6mls) from Londa Hotel. After a welcoming speech by the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaidis, fireworks light up the sky to begin the festivities, and free wine starts to flow as Limassol locals put their best foot forward. Right across the island, party celebrations are in full swing – but there’s even more meaning to welcoming the new year in Cyprus!
Long island tradition of nearly 1,700 years
According to a long island tradition of nearly 1,700 years, children would receive their Christmas presents on New Year’s Day and not on Christmas Day. After children had gone to sleep on New Year’s Eve, a cake – with a coin inside and a lighted candle on top – would be placed with a goblet full of wine by their mother alongside the Christmas tree. During the night, Saint Vasilis, the 4th century Greek version of Santa Claus, would arrive to bless the cake and drink the wine. Then “Ai-Vasilis” places presents for the children under the tree. In the morning the children would cut Santa’s cake, known as “Vasilopitta”, and the child with the piece of cake containing coin inside was to be the “lucky one” in the year ahead.
It could be said that everybody’s a “lucky one” at the Londa Hotel on New Year’s Day! In our own established tradition, guests will be greeted with a stylish luxury menu throughout the first hours of 2018, from a ‘rich’ New Year’s Day breakfast and lunch buffet to an A La Carte Dinner at the Caprice Restaurant.
In the same way as the Caprice offers the eternally satisfying taste of authentic Cypriot culture, so too Londa Hotel looks forward to welcoming all our visitors and guests to the coming season’s exciting tariff of festivals, concerts and exhibitions for island travellers of the luxury boutique kind! Preparations are already underway for the Limassol carnival, now just six weeks away…
Londa Beach Hotel Management and Staff wish all our guests a Happy & Healthy New Year 2018!
