‘Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.’ So said Benjamin Franklin and so say the crowd every year at the Limassol Wine Festival!
It’s fun, it’s relaxed and this is the occasion when wine is celebrated as it should be; with laughter and friends.
August wine event
If you are coming to stay at the Londa in August, then we urge you to try out the Limassol Wine Festival while you are here.
Every year at the end of the official summer months but when the sun is still high in the daytime skies, the Municipal Gardens opposite the seafront and close to the centre of town, play host to this local Wine Festival. Thousands pour in to taste the new wines created from grapes grown in the hillsides above Limassol and Paphos, and you can’t get more local than that!
In 2014, the two week festival is from Saturday 30 August to Tuesday 9 September and after 53 years of putting on this festival it is still as popular as ever.
Drinking like gods
The Big 4 wineries of Cyprus, ETKO, KEO, SODAP and LOEL pull out all the stops to bring their new bottles for everyone to taste and some of the boutique wineries flourish their portfolio looking for your opinion on wine that they offer.
The protocol is to buy a carafe and fill up at the wine stations or meet the wine producers and taste at their stalls. Food restaurants selling BBQ line the garden paths and entertainment is from local musicians treating us to the sounds of traditional Greek songs. And if you really want to play the part, you can join the grape-treading in the huge barrel sloshing with fruit.
Enjoy the wine
In 53 years the Festival has grown but alongside the event, wine drinkers also recognise that the wine itself has changed. Certainly over the last 10 years, Cyprus wine has grown in international reputation, winning awards and being enjoyed by more and more in the local market and abroad.
Oenologists have trained in France and in California and brought back skills to share regarding winemaking, cellar work has improved greatly and in the vineyards, new techniques appreciate the Cyprus climate and varietals grown in the hills.
The Limassol Wine Festival is not an elegant tasting or fine dining event but it does comprise some great nights out of fun, feasting and finding your favourite Cyprus wine… a good recipe for holiday enjoyment.
