Limassol lights up Christmas Land and Wonderland - two festive events and more for all the family

First day of December. Excitement’s in the air, anticipation building… The winter months may be a warm Mediterranean 20C in Limassol but you know the festive season is here when the annual Christmas Wonderland arrives at the Old Port. And this year, visitors may behold a further twinkling of starry lights against the ancient night sky with the arrival of Limassol Christmas Land. Both are located just a short distance from Londa Hotel.

It’s sometimes said that Easter is thought of in the Greek Orthodox church as having greater religious importance than Christmas. Nothing could be further from the truth! In reality, a rich variety of cultural events and traditional fun-sized family activities continue to draw increasing numbers of visitors each year to Cyprus. There were just over 98,900 visitors to the island in December 2017 – compared to nearly 88,000 who arrived during the same period in 2016 – a rise of 12.5 per cent (Passenger Survey – Cyprus Statistical Service, Jan 2018).

Hours of fun activities for both young and old

Following the success of Fairytale Land in Nicosia, the first Limassol Christmas Land opens on 30th November at Enaerios parking place, next door to Limassol Zoo, and not far from the new Marina. Every weekday, between 4pm and 11pm (Sat | Sun from 11am to 11pm), a spectacular amusement park – packed with the latest games – will provide hours of fun activities for both young and old. Santa with his helpers, is also due to arrive from Finland, bringing presents for all the children.

Regularly throughout the month, a series of concerts will be held at Christmas Land, featuring popular Greek artists, which opens with Cypriot recording artist and a former Eurovision Song Contestant, Michalis Hatzigiannis (November 30th) followed in December by 6-piece Greek-Reggae fusion band, Locomondo (13th). Former girl group ‘Mystique’ turned solo singer, actress and fashion designer, Eleni Foureira will perform on the 20th, then teen artists, Xana Zoo on the 23rd followed by Greek Hip-Hop band Stavento (28th) and finally Greek “laiko” – or “popular folk music” – singer, Giorgos Tsalikis (2nd Jan).

Opportunity to enjoy a great Limassol tradition

The very next day after Limassol Christmas Land opens, from the 1st December- 6th January, holidaymakers have the opportunity to enjoy a great Limassol tradition- the annual Christmas Wonderland at the Old Port – just 6 kms (3.8 miles) from Londa Hotel.

A firm favourite on the festive calendar, once again, the switching on of the Wonderland lights and a stunning Santa Claus parade will kickstart the month long festive celebrations. Santa’ s train will actually pass through the Old Port and youngsters can explore Santa’s Grotto, complete with his busy helper elves!

Young ones love to receive sugary treats at any time, but especially at Christmas, but adults with a sweet tooth are sure to also be drawn to an amazing mouth-watering chocolate fountain and the many Christmas sweet workshops dotted around the square. Plus, the Christmas Village will be surrounded by a Christmas Market where hot chocolate and mulled wine will be available, and stalls selling every kind of Christmas treat, toys and decorations.

There’s much to see and do for all the family, from a “real animal” nativity scene, horse carriage rides and travelling on the carousel train to bumper cars and snow games at “North Pole” Square! But did you know that one winter sport activity can also be enjoyed throughout the entire year!

A few twirls on the ice to “cool off”

Occupying an area of 430 square metres and open daily from 11am to 11pm, the only indoor ice rink in Cyprus is located at MY MALL shopping mall in Limassol (15-20 minutes drive from Londa). Holidaymakers of all ages can enjoy Christmas skating in December or a few twirls on the ice to “cool off” in the high summer when the mercury is daily hitting 25-30C. Instructors are always ready to help visitors, and private and group lessons are available for beginners. Performances and competitions also regularly take place at the rink.

As the daily opening of the Advent calendar doors begin, throughout the district, and nearby towns and villages, the local community also start to assemble the ingredients for preparing the traditional Cyprus Christmas feast – more about this very soon! Meanwhile, the management and staff at Londa are looking forward to welcoming the many guests who have already booked their Christmas and New Year Gala Dinner Packages featuring a special 5 course or a La Carte menu.

With so much to see and do in Limassol, it’s no surprise that Christmas in Londa may also be thought of as a “wonderland” of festive enjoyment and relaxation – Mediterranean style!
